Paddle Like a Pro: 3 Techniques to Increase Your SUP Speed and Efficiency
Are you working hard but not going fast? Many beginners rely solely on their arm strength, which leads to quick fatigue. To master your Touring SUP Board, you need to engage your entire body. Here is how to refine your stroke.
1. The "Reach" (The Catch)
Don't just drop the paddle in the water. Reach forward as far as comfortable by rotating your torso. The goal is to get the paddle blade fully submerged into the water "quietly." In the isup vs sup performance world, a clean catch is the secret to high speed.
2. Engage Your Core (The Power Phase)
Instead of pulling the paddle with your arms, think about "pulling the board past the paddle." Use your core muscles and back. Keep your arms relatively straight. This technique is much more sustainable for long-distance Touring SUP sessions.
3. The Early Release
A common mistake is pulling the paddle too far back past your feet. This actually lifts water and slows you down. Release the paddle at your feet and start the next stroke. This keeps your board's nose down and your speed up.
Proper technique is easier on a high-pressure board. Ensure your blow up sup is inflated to at least 15-18 PSI with a reliable electric pump for sup boards to ensure it remains rigid under the power of your core strokes.
